Maintaining a healthy weight is extremely important in reducing the risk of several diseases, but it can be hard to reach a healthy weight with research suggesting that obesity affected around one in four adults in the UK.

In order to lose weight, the body needs to be in a calorie deficit.

This means for weight loss to occur, a slimmer needs to be burning more energy than they are consuming.

Despite this seeming fairly simple, many struggle to lose weight.

Channel 4’s The Secret Lives of Slim People followed different people’s eating habits to determine what it was that helped them stay in shape.

The programme followed a teacher called Hayley who was a busy mum-of-three and a teacher.

Despite Hayley’s eating habits being extremely unhealthy, she manages to stay petite in a size six clothing.

A typical day in her life consists of a cream cheese bagel with crisps for lunch as well as eating large bars of chocolate several times a day.

For dinner, she had a large roast chicken dinner and sat down to enjoy it with her family before making a pudding.

For dessert, which was an everyday occurrence in the family’s life, she had a serving of chocolate pudding with double cream.

How does she manage to stay so slim despite eating large bars of chocolate each day?

The experts on the show revealed that when the family sat down for their evening meal, the mum-of-three didn’t start her dinner for a whole eight minutes.

She also took 28 minutes to consume her dinner, which is significantly longer than the average.

The experts explained that there is some research to suggest that eating slowly can help contribute to weight loss.

According to Healthline, after a meal, the gut suppresses a hormone called ghrelin, which controls hunger, while also releasing fullness hormones.

The website said: “These hormones tell the brain that you have eaten, reducing appetite, making you feel full, and helping you stop eating.”

Also having three children meant that Hayley managed to stay fairly active day-to-day without hitting the gym or going for a run.

Experts found that she walks around four kilometres a day on average, which can also help contribute to maintaining a healthy weight.

Exercising is a crucial part of keeping healthy and it can reduce the risk of developing several diseases.

Regular activity can have immediate and long-term benefits and hitting 10,000 steps every day is a target for some.

While exercise doesn’t directly contribute to weight loss, working out regularly can help provide the body with a larger calorie deficit.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Daria Gambles from Contour, has shared some of the best body movements for weight loss.

The expert said: “Some of the best moves you can do are body weight moves – squats, lunges, press ups, planks, pull-ups, etc.

“These are super effective – squats and lunges help your lower body and your core, and they work on stability and strength of the legs, plank and press ups are very good for your upper body – upper back, upper arms, etc.”

“These, all done correctly, are super effective for your upper and lower body.

“To add resistance to your workout, I would suggest to invest in a kettlebell (16kgs) or dumbbells.”
