Local Eats: Saginaw’s El Farolito Taqueria has 75-cent-taco Thursdays

SAGINAW, MI — El Farolito Taqueria & Catering is open in downtown Saginaw’s SVRC Marketplace for takeout, curbside and delivery service.

The Mexican eatery, which also operates a pop-up food trailer, offers 75-cent hard shell tacos every Thursday, plus a variety of other dishes, such as traditional Mexican soups pazole and menudo, fideo, chicharrones, tamales, churros, street tacos and more. A Hawaiian-style street taco made with house-cured and smoked bacon, roasted pineapple, cilantro, red onion and mango sriracha sauce was a recent special.

“We’re not just a Mexican restaurant, we’re a taqueria, and the owners let me have a little bit of fun with that concept,” said Executive Chef Robert Balderrama.

Balderrama is always experimenting with new taco recipes and flavors, like the Hawaiian-style street taco mentioned above, and he plans to try a Korean-style taco in the future and fish tacos for Lent, to name a few.

“My personal favorite is the chicharrones con chili taco,” he said. “It’s a really delicious dish that’s been part of the El Farolito menu for a long, long time.”

Balderrama said he aims to offer dishes customers won’t find at other restaurants.

“I want people to come in and see our menu and be like, ‘Oh I’ve never seen that before, I’d like to try that,’” he said.

El Farolito Taqueria & Catering offers takeout and curbside service, plus free delivery for orders over $20 within the city of Saginaw. Find El Farolito Taqueria & Catering on Facebook or call 989-332-9905 to learn more.

SVRC Marketplace is located at 203 S. Washington Ave. in downtown Saginaw. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
