Trend: Bookstore Bars With Great Food and Natural Wine

A bookstore with a bar is easily one of mankind’s best inventions, up there with polar fleece and those potato chips that taste like ham. There’s usually a big chair, and if you do it right, you can read for hours while sipping a coffee or a glass of wine. However, bookstore bars have usually been bookstores first: The coffee is serviceable, the wine probably comes from a bag of Franzia, and the snacks tend to be mass-produced or just mediocre. But in the past few years, a new generation of operators has rewritten the story of what a bookstore

Vegan Raspberry Brownie Ice Cream Bars | Kitchen Vignettes for PBS

I often get requests for recipes that are less reliant on butter & eggs, and that are gluten-free, so I wanted to come up with a fun plant-based recipe that would be refreshing for these sweltering heat waves we’ve been having, and also gluten-free. (And not require an ice cream maker since I don’t have one!) On hot days, I find myself reflecting more than ever on the connection between what we put on our plates and the climate crisis we find ourselves in. There’s no question that agriculture and the transportation of food across long distances are major contributors

A longtime critic of Five Points bars, Harpootlian files bill to amend SC liquor law

Democratic state Sen. Dick Harpootlian is now taking his bar battles to the South Carolina State House. Harpootlian, a Columbia Democrat, attorney and the former chairman of the state Democratic Party, has filed legislation that would make plain the percentage of food and nonalcoholic beverages that an establishment would have to sell in order to maintain a liquor license. Under current state law, establishments that serve liquor by the drink must be “engaged primarily and substantially in the preparation and serving of meals,” and must be equipped with a kitchen utilized for cooking meals, have menus for food posted or

How to make lemon bars from the Reddit-famous recipe

When Redditor Megan Hood (u/justhood) shared her Grandma Caroline’s lemon bar recipe in the r/Old_Recipes subreddit last year, she had no idea the it would develop a cult following of thousands. Hood, who lives in Illinois, says it’s a mystery where Grandma Caroline, who has since passed away, got the wildly popular recipe. “I’m betting that like a lot of baking housewives of her time, it was on the side of a package or given by a friend,” Hood told TODAY Food. “The lemon squares were her no-fuss treat … she used a very specific deep aluminum pan that

The maker of M&M’s and Snickers is buying Kind bars in a bid for healthy snacks

Terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were not disclosed. It comes at a time when consumers have become increasingly interested in healthy snacks and food products. Mars, which sells candies like M&M’s, Snickers, and Twix, doesn’t have much to offer on that front. Mars bought a minority stake in Kind in 2017. As part of that deal, it took control of Kind International, helping grow the business outside of the United States and Canada. The deal announced Tuesday will make Mars the owner of Kind North America as well. With the help of Mars’ initial investment, Kind has started selling

New covid rules for bars and restaurants, other food news

If you found yourself starting at your buzzing phone late last night, you no doubt tuned in for Gazza’s address to the state regarding Covus; what you might not have heard as part of the message though, are the specific new rules that will affect bars and restaurants. First up bars will now be required to close at 10 p.m. – which means last call is now 9 p.m. folks (edit: we’ve since been tipped by industry gurus that DABC compliance has confirmed drinks can be served until 10). Secondly, restaurants should now only serve groups that consist of people

From pasta pies to caramel bars: Yotam Ottolenghi’s pumpkin recipes | Food

It’s a week past Halloween and nearly three until Thanksgiving, which means it’s pumpkin time! Cinderella may not be pulling up in a carriage at either celebration this year, but don’t let that stop you having a ball. There are so many varieties to get to know. Kabocha, with its creamy, nutty flesh, is my current favourite, but I also have a soft spot for the small, dark orange potimarron, which has a rich, roast chestnut flavour. The main difference between pumpkin and squash is the texture of the flesh, with pumpkin tending to be more fibrous. So long

Many landmark restaurants, bars won’t reopen after virus | Food and Cooking

The Ybor City landmark is hardly alone in shutting down for good. Iconic spots from San Francisco to New York also won’t be back. Restaurants are traditionally low-margin businesses in high-rent locations, with little in cash reserves. They depend on liquor markups and high cash flow to sustain their overhead, but revenues have plummeted nationwide as fears of infection and public health requirements keep customers away. More than half the nearly 24,000 restaurants that have closed since the pandemic began will not reopen, the Yelp online business review service found in a July 25 economic report. In San Francisco, the
