Sacramento blogger turns Chinese food to viral Instagram posts

The video starts with a splash of hot oil, sizzling over a ceramic bowl of finely chopped garlic, scallions and grated ginger. When the oil hits the herbs, it gives off a crackle so crisp you can practically smell it floating off the screen, turning a handful of bubbling aromatics into ambrosia. It’s an Instagram video from Lisa Lin, 34, of “Healthy Nibbles and Bits,” and she’s showing you how to make ginger scallion oil, a classic twin to yellow-skinned Hainanese chicken. It’s this magnetic reel that draws people to her food blog, where her recipes span from innovations   Read More

Sacramento, CA home cook wins Top Ramen noodle competition

David Chan’s blog, Nichijou Ramen, roughly translates to “Ramen Every Day.” Fitting. Chan will receive 50 years’ worth of Top Ramen starting next week after being named Nissin Foods’ first-ever Chief Noodle Officer earlier this month. He earned the title by turning a package of soy sauce instant noodles into a yuzu mille-feuille, a many-layered French pastry whose originators surely never conceived of it this way. Chan’s prize will come in annual shipments of 16 boxes containing 24 Top Ramen packages apiece through 2070 — 19,200 meals in all. He’ll also receive $10,000 and get to preview new Nissin   Read More

Nguyen grew up eating Vietnamese food — it was   Read More

Sacramento chef launches Michelin Minivan, a ‘Michelin-quality’ food delivery service

J.D. Snead calls the Michelin Minivan a “quarantine baby.” Before the pandemic started, Snead cooked at Kasbah — a Middle Eastern eatery in midtown — and bartended at the Shady Lady saloon. But like many workers in the restaurant industry, he was out of a job once the stay-at-home order arrived in mid-March. “I just kept cooking for my sanity,” said Snead. He made chicken adobo, a dish that pays homage to his Filipino-Scottish roots; he ventured into Italian food, Hawaiian poke and Korean barbecue. Soon, he realized he could be “selling these plates just to have some stream of   Read More
