Thomasville soul food restaurant will close on Dec. 31

Carl “Doe” Clark has loved every minute of watching people from all walks of life come together in his dining room at Down Home Cooking and Catering By Doe during its three years and three months tenure at 615 E. Main St. in Thomasville.

But when the dining room closed to dine-in customers in March when COVID-19 began spreading across the country and state, a huge part of the joy Clark derived from operating the restaurant and catering business went away, said the 67-year-old. Watching customers pick up take out orders was just not the same as watching his dining room be filled with customers eating his soul food.

With it also went the business’s financial stability. Business has dropped 85 percent this year, a staggering financial loss that Doe’s cannot survive, he said. Clark made the decision in early December to close the restaurant for good on Dec. 31.
