North Fort Myers farm-to-table restaurant wants you to know what’s in your food

NORTH FORT MYERS Your food shouldn’t be a mystery, but often the ingredients in your dinner are. Rose O’Dell King, the owner of Rosy Tomorrows Heritage Farm in North Fort Myers, is trying to change that. With a breeze blowing through the garden and the sun shining down on the longhorns, the farm-to-table experience is as authentic as it gets at Rosy Tomorrows. “Most of everything we serve comes from here,” said O’Dell King. She started the 100-acre farm nestled in North Fort Myers to feed her family. The restaurateur said she didn’t like not knowing what was in

What’s food got to do with it? Tina Turner tune leads to thoughts of healthy food

I drive down the road with the windows rolled down listening to the Tina Turner song, “What’s love got to do with it.” I turn up the radio, sing along. This song plays through my mind all day. Life is busy. We can find ourselves tired, burned out and at risk for health problems. I think of Hippocrates’s quote, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Now, after listening to Tina Turner, I ask the question: “What’s food got to do with it?” As a VA dietitian, I teach Veterans the importance of food and nutrition. Each

What’s a ghost kitchen? A food industry expert explains | Food and Cooking

The co-founder of a takeout business called The Bussdown plates a dish at the ghost kitchen he cooks out of in Oakland. Stephen Lam/The San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images While the phrase “ghost kitchen” may conjure up images of haunted houses, the reality is a bit more mundane. Ghost kitchens are food prep operations with no waiters, no dining room and no parking lot – really, no public presence whatsoever. But on food delivery apps, they’re alive and well. In short, ghost kitchens are physical spaces for operators to create food for off-premises consumption. And on apps like Grubhub

    What’s your favorite stinky food?

A freshly-opened can on surstrommingPhoto: TOM LITTLE / Contributor (Getty Images) Some of the best food on the face of this planet is the strongest smelling. Open a jar of kimchi in a pristine room and revel in the farty smell. (Don’t worry, we know. That’s why some Korean households even have a dedicated kimchi fridge.) There’s stinky tofu, which literally has the word “stinky” in the name. Durian is as loved about as much as it smells—that is to say, a lot—and blue cheese has its die-hard fans. Hell, frankly a lot of cheese smells

Vegan vs Vegetarian: What’s the Difference?

If you keep tabs on the health and diet world, at this point you’ve probably noticed that there’s a ton of buzz around plant-based diets. If you’re skeptical, just scroll on Instagram for two minutes and you’ll likely see a new green smoothie recipe and healthy food swaps for non-meat eaters. “Vegan and vegetarian diets are different forms of plant-based diets where someone chooses to get the majority of their protein from plant sources and limit or restrict the amount of animal-based food they consume,” says Melissa Rifkin, MS, RD, CDN. However, when it comes to vegetarian vs vegan, it

    What’s the Best Cooking Oil?

TURNS OUT even an ingredient that seems pretty basic can lead you down a rabbit hole. Take cooking oil. Some types are better for high-heat cooking; others are ruined by high temperatures, losing their delicate flavors and even turning rancid. What should you use and when? Here’s your guide. The smoke point is the temperature at which oil will smoke and break down into free fatty acids. Refined oils, stripped of impurities and volatile compounds, have higher smoke points while virgin or raw oils burn more easily, said Harold McGee, author of the seminal “On Food and Cooking: The Science

Yoga and taking care of your body: What’s for dinner?

Yes, I am a yoga enthusiast but a far cry from being a vegetarian. I am a cowgirl at heart, work cattle and eat meat. Some may consider it a spiritual contradiction. In my humble opinion, diet is about moderation and what works for your own body. As you know, food is fuel for your body, and if you put bad fuel in such as carbs, sugar, alcohol your body will not run well. In Light on Yoga, BKS Iyengar writes, “A vegetarian diet is a necessity for the practice of yoga.” A few pages later he qualifies his statement

Air frying vs. baking: What’s the best cooking method?

Air fryers are a popular alternative to traditional frying and baking.  Chris Monroe/CNET Fried food tastes good. This is a belief I’ve firmly held my entire life, and you can’t tell me otherwise. Still, I’ll admit dunking breaded foods into searing hot oil is perhaps not the healthiest culinary technique. Delicious, but not great for you. Enter the air fryer. These popular alternatives offer a crispy finished product without all that unhealthy oil.  On the other hand, people have been serving up chicken wings and bagel bites from ovens and toaster ovens for decades now. So which method really

Nutrition and mental health: What’s the link?

Diet influences numerous aspects of health, including weight, athletic performance, and risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. According to some research, it may affect mental health, too. Anxiety and depression are among the most common mental health conditions worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression could be one of the top health concerns in the world by 2030. Therefore, it is not surprising that researchers continue to search for new ways to reduce the impact of mental health conditions, rather than relying on current therapies and medications. Nutritional psychiatry is an

What’s the best diet for 2021? Mediterranean, flexitarian and DASH top the list

For the fourth year in a row the Mediterranean diet ranked first in overall best diets, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual list. DASH and flexitarian diets tied for second place in overall diets; the former focuses on lowering blood pressure and the latter is a modified vegetarian diet. The experts say such rankings aren’t surprising as all three diets share similarities: They’re easy to follow and focus on what foods people can include, not exclude. “The Mediterranean pattern of eating is that it’s really centered around what are the foods that you add in as opposed to
