Registration Opens for Inaugural Grounds for Health Week

The Vermont-based cervical cancer prevention nonprofit Grounds for Health has opened registration for its Grounds for Health Week, a fundraising campaign taking place March 8-15. Coffee shops and roasters are encouraged to participate by fundraising through various means, with promotional and marketing support provided by GFH. The organization has been providing women’s health programming in coffee communities since 1996. Registration for Grounds for Health week runs through Feb. 15.

Verité Hosting Online Event Addressing Coffee Sector Labor Risks

Verité and the Cooperation on Fair Free Equitable Employment (COFFEE) Project are hosting a virtual learning event on Feb. 7, addressing the elevated risk of forced and child labor in the Latin American coffee sector. Tailored to actors throughout the supply chain, the event will highlight approaches to identify, address and prevent labor risks.

UK Coffee Shop Market Report Sees Slowdown in Growth

The new Project Café UK 2024 report by World Coffee Portal reveals a slowdown in outlet growth rate in the UK branded coffee shop market, with one quarter of the chain operators identified seeing overall net reductions in their numbers of coffee shops.

Management Buys UK Coffee Company Paddy & Scott’s

CEO Jonathan Reed and Operations Director Zoe Hill have completed a successful management buyout of Paddy & Scott’s Coffee, a Suffolk (UK)-based roaster and cafe chain. The ownership change follows 28% year-on-year growth, according to the company, which did not disclose the financial terms of the buyout.

Study Suggests High-Pressure Processing of Cold Brew May Extend Shelf Life

A new study supported by high-pressure solutions maker Hiperbaric sheds new light on the shelf-stability of cold-brewed coffee. The study supports the idea that high-pressure processing showed promise in extending the shelf-life by reducing the risk of microbial growth.

Israel’s Pluri Launches Cellular Coffee Business

Israeli biotech company Pluri has launched a cell-based (cellular agriculture) coffee business. The company plans to create a new subsidiary focused on innovative “coffee” products, led by Michal Ogolnik, while seeking industry partners for its cell-based manufacturing solutions, according to a report from Israeli business newspaper Globes.

ICO, GCP and German Government Sign Declaration to Support Coffee Sector

The International Coffee Organization (ICO), Global Coffee Platform (GCP), and German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development signed a joint declaration at the Grüne Woche exhibition in Berlin. The declaration focuses on sustainable transformation in the global coffee sector with key elements including living income, market transparency and gender equity.

Downtown San Francisco Shop Mazarine to Close

A downtown San Francisco coffee mainstay of nearly a decade, Mazarine Coffee has closed. Owner Hamid Rafadi, who founded the popular Market Street shop in 2014, told the San Francisco Standard that climbing rent combined with less traffic following the pandemic led to the financial decision.

Modern Times Launches Sherry Barrel Coffee for V-Day

San Diego craft brewing and coffee roasting company Modern Times is appealing to the heart this month with the launch of the Coffee Lover Gift Set. Nestled cozily between two glass coffee mugs is an 8-ounce bag of “New Romantics Sherry Barrel-Aged Coffee,” a single-origin Kenyan coffee that was aged in barrels.

First Pret A Manger Shop Opening in Canada

The first Canadian brick-and-mortar location of UK-born chain Pret A Manger is scheduled to open in early February. Popup shops in Vancouver and Toronto have been introducing Canadians to the brand, which launched in 1986.
